Hi everyone, welcome back and thank you for clicking on my post! If you have clicked on this post then I am sure the questions you have on your mind is “ Should I get a GoPro ”, “ Which GoPro should I buy? ” or maybe “ Reasons to buy GoPro in 2022 ”. If that’s the case then you are exactly where you need to be. Stay tuned as we deep dive into some of the realistic reason to consider getting a GoPro in 2022.

With the pandemic coming to an end (or almost coming to an end) many of us will soon be out and about creating memories and content which we would not want to miss. To make that happen we would need a camera which is budget friendly and comes with versatile features, often we are stuck between the choice of getting a DSLR or GoPro.

If you are stuck in a dilemma of making a choice between these two, then it all boils down to “Why do you need a camera?” in the first place. We already know the camera is to create content. So now, you would need to specify the type of content you will be creating. The questions below may help you to narrow down your choice;

Ask yourself which type of content you will be creating more;

  1. Videography – vlogs (travel, cooking, beauty and etc.), product shoot, model shoot, timelapse. Anything that involves capturing motion.
  2. Photography – portraits, product shoot, model shoot, beauty make-up shots. Anything that involves a still object.

Note: You are less likely to create equal amount of video & photography content. Hence you will really need to know which content you will be more inclined to create. More photographs and videos only when required (or the other way around).

Deciding the purpose of your content

  1. Professional purpose – where you create video or photo content with the aim to grow in a specific niche and collaborate with brand or make money out of it
  2. Personal purpose – capturing memories for future remembrance, startup personal vlog, shots for your personal social media or family functions

Note: The rationale behind this is that for professional purpose you would need to ensure the content you put out there to be of high quality especially if someone or a client is paying you to do so. However, if it’s for personal then you always have room for improvisation and growth, once you start to grow you could invest in a better gadget.

7 Things to know about GoPro

If you are into creating vlogs and GoPro is still on your list but you are still contemplating on getting a DSLR, then let’s further deep dive into some of the reasons that could help you make the right decision. We have listed down six key reasons for you to decide on getting GoPro

1. GoPro is small and light

As they say, never judge a book by its cover, in this case don’t judge the durability of GoPro based on its size, it’s a strong camera. GoPro is built for rough handling and you can be sure that it will stay protected during your outdoor activity.

If you are travelling and most of your plans includes extreme outdoor activities such as hiking, bungy jumping even watersports, rest assured with the right accessories the camera is able to withstand water (Hero 10; waterproof up to 33ft), rain, dust and dirt. As for traveler, the camera is light (Hero 10; 153 grams) making it travel friendly hence you would not have to worry about the weight of the camera and its gadget.

Just imagine this, you are hiking and the trail is steep, those with DSLR will start covering the camera lens and putting the camera back into the bag to protect it. On the other note, if you had GoPro, you could mount the camera to your body (forehead or chest) and get a more unique and perfect fitted angle shot. Its perfect for shooting POV as well.

2. Offers multiple shooting options in upgraded resolution

GoPro offers multiple options for you to shoot; there is video, photo and built in time-lapse, time-wrap and night-lapse. When you click on any of this option, the suggested setting will be shown, however you can always change the resolution, view and fps settings manually as well. You have more control over the shooting option.

Note: If you are professional with adequate post production knowledge then know that you could also shoot in raw with GoPro. Benefit of shooting in RAW is that when you bring the files for post-production you would have more information to work with and have more control over the outcome.

The latest GoPro Hero 10 has the capability of recording videos at 5.3k resolution at 60fps as opposed to its predecessor Hero 9 was only able to shoot videos at 5k resolution at 30fps. The supported frame rates have doubled for the other resolutions as well, for instance 4k videos can now be shot at 120fps and 2.7k at 240fps.

One of the major upgrades in this camera is the 23-megapixel resolution which is similar to the resolutions in most of the DSLR in the market. Would the pictures be as crisp as a DSLR? The answer is NO. However, the 23-megapixel resolution in GoPro Hero 10 especially is a huge step up for GoPro and its does make a difference in still shots.

4. Offers great built-in features

Built in time-lapse, time-wrap and night-lapse feature is a great feature especially for those who wants to cut the steps short and get these footages uploaded on your social media immediately. In a nutshell, minimal post production work required. It’s great for beginners too!

Time-wrap – The camera takes images at certain intervals and then combines these images into a video. The special thing about this time-wrap feature is that, its intended for situation where the camera is moving for example when you are riding a bike or walking to a particular place. It makes the footage appear cleaner as the video is optimally stabilized by the camera.

Time-lapse – This is a feature we are all familiar with and always look forward to having it built in on our gadgets. To get the best footage, you would need the camera to be placed at a stable place or even better to be mounted on a tripod. This feature does not offer stabilization by the camera so make sure it’s stabilized. Its great for capturing landscape to capture the movement based on time.

Night-lapse – This feature is similar to the time-lapse feature however as the name suggests, it is intended during the night or low light condition.

5. GoPro is waterproof

Yes, GoPro is waterproof and this is also one of the main reasons many of us get a GoPro. Since 2016 (GoPro Hero 5) the GoPro camera are waterproof without the external casing. However, this does not mean you could deep water diving with the camera case.

The GoPro camera body is waterproof and can tolerate rain and water splash. However, if you are intending to bring it into the deep water then you may add the Waterproof Housing Case and bring the camera to approximately 40 meters (131ft). For deep water divers, you would need to get the Dive Housing Case to bring the camera to approximately 60 meters (197 ft).

So, if you’re surfing this summer or heading to nice beaches, be sure to bring your GoPro with you and capture all those moments. You will not have worry about the rain and salt water ruining your camera.

6.Comes with upgraded lens

When it comes to lens, the good thing is that with GoPro you do not need to purchase any additional lens lie for DSLR’s which is why it makes is light and easy to be carried around. However, many GoPro owners and users have raised their concerns regarding the lens where you have to constantly wipe the lens to get rid of the water droplets, having noticeable flares in their footage and the scratches on the lens. Well, GoPro heard us all and they have now upgraded the lens for Hero 10.

GoPro Hero 10 comes with Hydrophobic coating on its lens. Meaning, the lens is now able to shed water from its lens to ensure no water droplets are formed that could potentially impact your footages. GoPro Hero 9 owners can purchase the lens on its own. The lens is also more scratch resistant than the previous lenses. The new lens also reduces the pink flares which was found in certain lighting conditions.

7. GoPro is wearable

Yes, you read that right. You can wear your GoPro and get the best shots. The accessories offered by GoPro is really great. You could mount it to your chest (chest mount), head (head mount), arm (arms band), wrist (wrist wrap), chin (helmet chin mount), neck (neck mount) while you are diving, hiking, swimming, running or even bungy jumping.

There is also tripod and monopod which helps with the stabilization and to have more control of the distance of the camera from the object.

For vloggers who are shooting while driving or shooting close-up beauty content suction pump accessories is the key. You could stick the camera on the windshield and record the journey and yourself while driving. Keep your hands on the wheels. Beauty vloggers, you could place the camera on the mirror when you are shooting those make up or skincare videos. You do not have to worry about space and setting up tripod. It’s that convenient.

Final thoughts

Well, there you go! We hope that eased your decision-making process. Personally, I have been enjoying GoPro Hero 10 myself, it makes shooting more flexible and hassle free.

So if you were to ask me “Which camera should I get?” or “Should I get a GoPro?” I would say “Go for GoPro”. Rest assured you will not regret getting a GoPro for yourself.
